How and what can you use mycorrhizal fungi for?

I want to know if you need to use a lot of this fungi to colonize a plant's roots or if it will work itself all throughout the plant's roots in a couple weeks? How much is really needed to get it colonized in 2-3 weeks, just a pinch, or a handful?How and what can you use mycorrhizal fungi for?
