Dude don't smoke that. Ever watched Teen Angel? Where the kid eats a moldy cheeseburger from under his bed and dies? You don't know what kind of mold that is so don't smoke it. I know someone who smoked weed that had a ******* cobweb in it, disgusting.
Sounds like its time to get some new supply.
It's probably moldy, don't smoke it.
you could stop smoking the weed, but that wouldn't be very fun
i think the damage is done already

You're going to have to leave this one blank. I can't think of any good answer.

';Reproduce'; is the obvious one, but it's not a good answer. Many fungi, including yeasts, reproduce vegetatively.

What is a home remedy for nail fungus... HELP?

home remdies only... no ';well go to a doctor';... THX!!What is a home remedy for nail fungus... HELP?
A low cost vinegar nail fungus home remedy has worked for many people people, you can try this:

Simply place 2 drops of distilled white vinegar (available at any grocery store) at the growing base of the effected nail twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. The vinegar can be applied with a dropper bottle or if you prefer, you can soak a cotton Q-tip and apply the vinegar that way.

Next, this procedure will have to be continued untill the infected nail is grown right off the body. That could take 6 months or longer for an infected toenail.

It is important that not a single application is missed because if you do, any new nail that is grown that day will be susceptible to fungal reinfection.

After following this vinegar nail fungus treatement for about two months you should see normal nail growing at the base of the nail. But remember you must continue the treatment until the infected nail grows right off he body. What is a home remedy for nail fungus... HELP?
Elsewhere on Y/A someone suggested Vicks Vaporub.

I haven't tried it but I yet so I don't know if it works.

Whitish mouldy-looking stuff reappear on parts of my black leather sofa in my apartment a few days after i remove them with Clorox wipes. How do I prevent mould, mildew, fungi from growing on my black leather sofa?
If this is mold you need a specialist product called mold killer or em clean which will kill the mold spores otherwise they will just keep coming back.

If the problem is with 'spew' you will need a fat and salt stabiliser to rectify the problem.

Mold will look powdery and spew will look like white salts but will feel greasy when rubbed between the fingers. How do I prevent mould, mildew, fungi from growing on my black leather sofa?
need to get rid of source of moisture. use dehumidifier.
clean it well and let it sit with the back in the sunlight to totally dry out the leather. You may want to remove the seat cushions and let the humidity out of the whole piece of furniture and if it's against the wall where there is a air intake return, you need to move it, and keep it at least 4 inches away from the wall, and that should stop the mildew from reoccurring. There is also a leather refinish and sealer (bought separately) you can use just on the back of the sofa if other preps don't work.
YOU NEED TO BUY A DEHUMIDIFIER!!! If you don't do it soon your stuff will be trash! They are a little investment but very worth it. You will be happy with the results. Go get one today!
you should go to home depot and find the molding wall that protects mold from coming in your house,it sure helped me!!
You need a de-humidifier in your apt. It will take the moisture out the air that causes the mold, mildew, and fungi. Also try and keep your couch away from the walls.
after you've cleaned it and conditioned your leather with the proper products start running your A/C unit or at least get a dehumidifier there is way too much humidity in your room
your apartment may be too damp. Maybe try running a dehumidifier and see if that helps. Might have to run it for several days and let your apartment manager know you seem to be having some kind of problem.

How can fungus harm us? i know they kill food, make us sick, but what else?

There are several serious resoiratory infections caused by inhaled fungi: blastomycosis, histoplasmosis and coccidiomycosis. Also, aspergillosis can set up in a lung cavity.

It is possible to get a bloodborne fungal infection, disseminated candidiasis.

Of course, you can eat a poisonous mushroom

Food contaminated with Aspergillus may contain aflatoxins, very deadly byproducts.

And of course, less serious problems like oral thrush, vaginal candidiasis, ringworm, athlete's foot, danfdruff, etc, plus moldy bread. And moldy walls causing allergies

There is a meningitis caused by cryptococcus, especially in immune deficient patient.

Various fungal blights can destroy crops and affect the food supply.

Cure for fungus on toe nails?

    Hi Everyone:

I just wanted to know if some of you know about an effective home/medical treatment for curing fungus on toe nails. I am not currently suffering from that nail infection. However, the other day I noticed that the nail of my big right toe was slightly different so I just wanted to be prepared inthe event I could have this problem. I would really appreciate that some of you help me out by giving me the right advise.

Thank you in advanceCure for fungus on toe nails?
Some nails turn grey or darker from rubbing on shoes, my little toes would get this from tight shoes. But if it is fungus, it is a tough one to get under control. The prescription method is a pill that you take for months and is known to cause liver damage. But Tea tree essential oil and it's more powerful cousin Manuka oil have been showing great results. Apparently with nail fungus the important thing is to never miss an application because is it waiting to spring up into full force again.Cure for fungus on toe nails?
Whether white vinegar or apple cider vinegar, this is the cheapest treatment intended to eradicate fungal infections from toenails or fingernails.

Most vinegar cure toe nail fungus consists of daily foot baths in a solution of 50% water and 50% vinegar.

It is suggested to alternate and mix hot baths and cold baths, although in either case, it is necessary to keep your feet soaking for at least 30 minutes. People who have successfully tried this treatment recommend 3 baths a day, morning, noon and evening.

The acidity of vinegar relieves the itching and repairs the PH balance, necessary to combat fungi, the microorganism responsible for toenail fungus. Vinegar is a sour tasting liquid, resulting from the oxidation of ethanol in fermented fruit juice, cider, beer, wine, and other liquids containing alcohol.

  • Where did the saying ';There's a fungus among us'; originate?

Just curious...Where did the saying ';There's a fungus among us'; originate?
    LOL

    Funny question.

I searched this quite extensively (sad, I know ... it's a boring day at work lol), and really couldn't find anything ... actually most of what I found was about mushrooms ... how to cook them, how to cultivate them, etc.

I think really this is just a silly thing that people say because it sounds funny and it rhymes, as far as I know, it has no deep meaning, or any meaning at all, really ... does it? :-)

    Sorry, that's all I got.

EDIT: LOL ... ok, I found a little something on a link description when I did a google search that said ';'A fungus among us' ... fungi share a common ancestor with humans'; ... but when I went to the link, I couldn't find the original text that this was referring to ... not being an evolutionist myself, this seems completely ludicrous to me, but maybe this saying came from the fact that great great great great great great great great great great great great great grandpa was a mushroom? ;-)

EDIT #2: WOOHOOO ... ok, I found the actually text about our ';cousin mushrooms'; ... she link below

LOL ... thanks for this question, you'll never know the entertainment you've provided me ... I know I haven't helped you a bit, but you can't say I didn't give it my best shot :-P

HELP fungus on carpet and leather chairs.?

my white carpet is full of brown spots (fungus) and also on my leather chairs. Ive tried using carpet cleaners to get rid if the spots, but there still there and i used my sofa cleaning kit and it hasnt come off. any ideas? by the way i got my house fitted with carpet andnew sofas 5 months agoHELP fungus on carpet and leather chairs.?
What in the world is wrong with your house?! It would take a serious mold problem, higher humidity and very poor air circulation to cause this.

When they put down the new carpeting, did you see the sub-floor? Was it mold free? Do you have problems with mold in other areas of the house? Do you regularly change the furnace filters? AC filters?

I'd call in mold experts to first verify you have mold, not an insect problem. Then they can set out canisters to monitor the air to determine the mold spore count (maybe you can order these on line yourself and test the house).

If you have a humidity problem, I'd check into getting one or another dehumidifier. I'd also look into getting better air circulation around the house. If you have a new home, it may be too tight and you need to balance the air inside with something like a Skuttle air flow system.

There's also a chance the sofa and carpeting were contaminated before you purchased them....maybe they were where it flooded. If you have no other mold in the house, I'd be seriously looking that the items were damaged before they arrived. Problem there is, then your house is such the contaminated stuff could bloom.....unless experts can testify otherwise. That's why you need licensed mold inspector to help. and no I'm not one.

Toe fungus or just a bruise?

So I was wearing nail polish for a couple of days and when I took it off I noticed a pretty big spot under one of my toenails its like green/yellow/brown/purple.. I am really clumsy and have a bad habbit of hitting my toes against furniture or stairs so could it possibly be a bruise?

It's only one that one toenail and it doesn't hurt or anything.Toe fungus or just a bruise?
Judging from the colors, it just sounds like a bruise. The woman next door to me DOES have a toe fungus. Her toenails are completely black and yellow, not just in one spot.

But as always, if it doesn't get better, see your doc.

    Velvet fungus and stingrays?

sad to say but two of my stingrays have caught the velvet fungus....one of them(a female motoro) looks really sick and was bleeding over her body, the second (male motoro) has white patches over its left and right side. i was told by a trusted aquarium shop owner to add some aquarium salt and aquaclear and hope for the best (tho he also told me theres only a slim chance of recovery)....now, six hours later, the light bleeding\red sore has stopped and is covered with some white slime...but she looks a little better.....what is velvet?...how did i get it(no new fish)? any solutions? any preventatives? i was told it might even come from the store bought frozen krill or silversides.Velvet fungus and stingrays?
Velvet and fungus are two separate conditions. Velvet is a parasite that appears like a white powder, but the color changes to rust/gold when under a bright light. ';Fungus'; really isn't a fungus although it was once considered that. This rarely attacks healthy fish - it's opportunistic if there's a wound already or if the fish's immune system is weakened by poor water quality, improper temperature, pH, etc. There's a third possibility, called Columnaris, and this is a bacterial condition, although it appears more fungus-like. Without seeing your rays, it's difficult knowing which one you're dealing with.

If what your rays have is ';fuzzy'; in appearance, it's more likely one of the last two. In the body ';fungus';, the individual filaments should be distinct. The outline of the infection is generally irregular. This would be treatable with salt, although you also want to keep your water quality as good as possible. Double check things like the ammonia and nitrite levels, temperature, and make sure your rays are on an appropriate substrate - if they're attempting to burrow into a large or rough substrate, they may be injuring their skin, and the fungus is attacking open open wounds.

If this is Columnaris, the filaments will be more matted so you won't be able to make out individual filaments. The infection outline will be roughly circular. This also seems more likely of the conditions as the central portion of the infection often becomes a open red sore, with the ';fuzzy'; filaments just around the perimeter. Since this is a bacterial condition, salt doesn't have that much effect. Generally, an anitbiotic (Nifurpirinol, brand names of Binox or Furanace) is used, but rays can be sensitive to medications.

I've never kept freshwater rays myself, so I don't know that the above medications are appropriate for them. I'm going to forward this question to another user (Magicman - you can also contact him directly through his profile [see the 10 ten answerers in the fish forum]) who owns freshwater rays himself, and see if he can give you additional advice. Just in case he doesn't answer, I would suggest that you also ask your question at this website: http://www.wetwebmedia.comVelvet fungus and stingrays?

Could fungus grow inside of you?

wel i saw on tv that insects when they inhale spores of it the spores grows inside of their body...

then i remembered that i probably inhale some spores wen i open the poster color%26lt;it has fungus growing inside%26gt;..

so could it grow inside me........... hopely not....

thank you for answering.....Could fungus grow inside of you?
Your body has a strong defense system against anything entering your body that it does not recognize.

But in some cases - possible. Especially in your lungs, warm and weth, providing the kind of climate some fungi might well like. However, the kind of fungus you describe is a mold, and is not the kind of material that would transfer by air or that would grow within you.

So - yes, you can have fungus growing internally but no, it does not sound like you have an immediate concern.Could fungus grow inside of you?
    you're welcome
Candida Albicans - usually associated with with white raised lumps in the throat affecting immune suppressed people. Tina Capitis (dandruff) and Tinia Pedis (altheletes foot) are also fungus as is ring worm, but they are external.
    Maybe
OMG really? I never heard of that before!? Well not that it happens in the inside of you!
of course fungas can grow inside you. they call it fungal infections.
you just gave me something else to worry about
    Yes, under your nasty toe-nails.
Yeast overgrowth is a fungus infection and can affect men, woman and children. It can live in different areas of your body and can manifest itself in many ways.

I live in Florida and mold is very common here. The apartment that I use to live in had been flooded previous to me moving in and there were some spots where mold grew but I kept hitting it with bleach. Not long after we moved there I got a horrible rash under my arms that itched to the point of near insanity. I went to the dr and she said it was a fungal infection. I pieced the whole thing together, got a really strong probiotic and anti fungal soap and have been rash free for about 1 1/2 years.

So the answer to your question is yes they can live inside of you, gross as that may sound.
hardly, because some species can, but they live in desolated places.... you are ok
erm i think it can grow under your finger nails and toenails
Bacteria and all that exist in the colon.

  • Why are the shape of animal cells spherical, whereas plants and fungi are filamentous?

I know this has to do with surface area and volume, but im still unsure about why animal cells are spherical, and why plants/fungi are filamentous.. Please give as much detail as possible Why are the shape of animal cells spherical, whereas plants and fungi are filamentous?
    i won't give much detail but i would like to argue that not all animal cells are spherical and that not all plant and fungal cells are filamentous. the shape of the cells depend a lot on its function as well as location. here are some examples of cells that ';beg to differ';

    animal cells

    1. neurons - star-shaped

    2. muscle cells - elongated

    3. epithelial cells - can be flat (squamous), cuboidal, or columnar depending on the location

yeast cells which are fungi are not elongated at all, they are spherical in shape and capable of buddingWhy are the shape of animal cells spherical, whereas plants and fungi are filamentous?
They're not spherical, far from it, that's probably confusion from the simplified diagrams. No cell is perfectly spherical, certainly, and very few are even round. Nerve cells are entirely tendril, and some are over a metre long. Muscle cells are elongated, squamous epithelial cell are flat, sperm cells are tadpole-shaped, macrophage and neutrophil white blood cells are amoeboid. Cells come in all shapes and sizes. Look at a scanning electron micrograph of almost any cell (the 3D false-colour microscope ones) and you will see that they look miniature explosions. But a long of free-floating cells with revert to rough ball shapes, being the shape that can hold the most volume compared to surface area. Though usually they are covered with tendrils. Most cells that can be easily made available to be scanned by scanning electron microscopes are of these kinds.

Both plant and fungi cells have cell walls that provide a rigid shape and structure to their cells- plant cell walls are composed of cellulose (hugely long, straight chains of beta-glucose), while fungal cell walls are made of chitin (a protein also found in invertebrate shells and exoskeletons). Animal cells therefore are soft, and can change shape easily. Their structure is maintains and controlled by a ';cytoskeleton';, chains of proteins in the cytoplasm that can be created and dismantled with speed. These chains are also used to hold organelles like mitochondria and lysosomes in place, and they move around using transport proteins that literally ';walk'; along the chains. Plant and fungi cells also contain cytoskeletons for this purpose.
Are you in Ms. Schumacher's bio class because i swear i asked a question on yahoo a few weeks ago that you asked also hahah

What are 2 examples with fungi that have mutualistic relationships?

It doesn't have the answer in my biology book?! Please help! thanks! What are 2 examples with fungi that have mutualistic relationships?
    1. Ant-fungus mutualism is a symbiosis seen in certain ant and fungal species, where ants actively cultivate fungus much like humans farm crops as a food source. Interestingly, in some species, the ants and fungi are dependent on each other for survival. The leafcutter ant is a well known example of this symbiosis.

    2. In vineyards, larvae of the grape berry moth (Lobesia botrana) favour the development of the grey mould fungus Botrytis cinerea. . The presence of the fungus consistently led to a reduction in the duration of insect development (4鈥? d) and mortality (20鈥?7 %). The fecundity increased from 12 to 76 %. Moreover, the fact that the females laid eggs preferentially on fungus-infected grape berries confirms the mutualistic association between these organisms. The fungus alone contributed to the positive effects. What are 2 examples with fungi that have mutualistic relationships?
    idk.

Second, do the black spots seem to be growing? are they raised. If you touch them, does a bit come off your hand?

I'm suspecting that your kittens don't have a mouth fungus, but black pigment spots inside his mouth, and they just appeared this week. Many cats have them on the inside of their mouth, and on the outside lips, and nose. But, if the kittens are at all looking sick, in pain, not eating, or the spots are raised, or lumpy, then take the kittens to the vet right away.Help! it's most likely just pigment in the mouth.. just like people's mouths are red lots of cats have black spots in there mouth... unless there is somethign wrong with the cat and they are acting funny i think you should chill out... and they won't charge you with animal cruelty
Go to the vet! It's an infection just like you said. If you don't have them treated you can be charged with animal cruelty. If you can't afford it give them to a shelter who will treat it.

Not sure of course, they really need to see the Vet, ASAP.

ohk umm ive been having this fungus thing on my toe nails for awhile now and i dont know how to make it go away ive tried some medicines but they dont seem to work...anyone know how to make it go away??How to get rid of fungus?
You need to do this nearly every day until the toe nail completely grows out (10 months) Soak your foot/toe every day in vinegar as long %26amp; often as you can - I'd do it as I sat on toilet. Take a Vitamin E softgel and break it over the nail and spread it around every day (or as often as possible) One of these things should do it on their own, but both will make sure it's gone. When you soak in vinegar, it really pisses them off and they can make the toe nail throb. You've got to do it till the nail grows completely out, if you do it just for awhile the fungus will just spread again.

By surgical avulsion of infected nail together with systemic griseofulvin therapy the toenail fungus shall be cured. How do i cure toenail fungus?
This does work but you need to keep at it: Get a course nail file and file the top of the toenail as close to the nail bed as possible. At night apply vick's vapo rub to the affected nails(this breaks down the nails and makes them peel) get as much of the nail off as you can. Once the nail is removed from the bed you can use antifungal cream every day. Keep feet clean and dry as much as possible. The nail should start growing in normally if you have cleared up the infection completely.

If you see a podiatrist, they may remove the entire affected nails for you. Or they use a dremel-like sander to sand down the nails close to the nailbed and treat it with a topical medicine.
I know this sounds wierd but soak your toes in Listerine mouth wash! It works. good luck

Soak them in listerine, or maybe put them in nail polish remover for a minute.

Then take a nail file and file away the top layer that is discoloured.

(I had to nail fungus hahahaah)

    Fungus growing at sink area.?

Can anyone tell me how to get rid of fungus mushrooming inside the sink cabinet? I try plucking all the ';mushroom'; and use pesticide, but still gowing after a week or two.Fungus growing at sink area.?
put bleach in a spray bottle and spray the _____ out of it then scrub. if the area is constantly wet or damp it'll keep growing back. try to leave the cabinet door open till it dries... you can even try a blowdryer but wait for the smelly bleach odor to pass.Fungus growing at sink area.?
Bleach... but if that doesn't work Google it.
Put a little clorox bleach in a spray bottle and finish filling with watter. Spray this mixture on the fungus and mold often..It will at least temporarly solve the problem.
Get a cheap spray bottle and make a 4:1 water:bleach solution. Spray the area down and figure out where the hell the moisture is coming from!
Hi, Your fungus is growing because you have a leak somewhere. The only way to control mold, mildew, fungus, etc is to control the moisture. This is true in the crawlspace or in the vanity cabinet. Either there is a plumbing leak or water from the counter above is running into or behind the vanity. Stop the source of moisture. Then I recommend sauteing the mushrooms! - Enjoy!
Bleach...teaspoon in qt spray bottle and spray it.
Pete P is correct. However, STOP peeling the ';mushroom'; stuff away, unless you are wearing a face mask, and even then the spores from the fungus will spread.

Wet it all down with the solutions the others have suggested. Use a scraper to remove the wetted fungus and dispose of that in a sealed baggie.

Then, find the leak. Pesticide is for bugs, not molds. Won't even touch it. Fungicide is easy to buy, but you do have to find the source of the leak and get it repaired. Otherwise you are going to have problems that will cost you a lot more than the suggested fixes.

It's Environmentally friendly, biodegradable, chemical free. How do I maintain humidity in my wardrobe. Keep things from getting damaged by moulds/fungi?
When we lived in the tropics every closet had a protected light fixture. An incadescent bulb will put out enough heat to control humidity in a reasonable sized closet .
    Maybe a small dehumidifier
if your wardrobe is an individual wardrobe and not a room closet and you have air cond in your home leave the doors open or cracked open during high humidity days. if it is a closet you probably need attic ventilation. if attic ventilation is closed off during winter to save heat, they have to be open during summer or you will always have a moisture problem. hope this helps.

She may have the fungus in her system. A prescription from DR will get rid of it. As for having it there, fungus likes to grow in warm moist places. she needs to wash often and dry completely with a hair dryer on cool setting. Are the backs of her knees itchy, or in her belly button, under breasts? See a DR. It does not go away by itself

Can bacteria or fungi live and grow in diet orange soda, or any other soda?

That is, can they live and grow in carbonated soft drinks if they were innoculated into them? Can bacteria or fungi live and grow in diet orange soda, or any other soda?
All soft drinks are prone to spoilage due to yeast, fungi and bacterial growth. These proliferate because of their ability to resist sorbic and benzoic acid, tolerate highly acidic levels, and grow anaerobically (i.e. thrive in an environment without oxygen). Can bacteria or fungi live and grow in diet orange soda, or any other soda?
While theory says that bacteria need certain nutrients to survive and go, I have learned that they can really grow anywhere, in anything. I work in Biology research and once went for a tube of 100% isopropanol (rubbing alcohol), which of course is suppose to be a disinfectant, able to kill germs on contact. Well there was a huge colony of bacteria growing in it!!

As far as your question, if a soft drink where contaminated with even the smallest speck of bacteria, it will grow. While not the bacteria's favorite environment, it is acidic (which most species like acidic environments) and has loads of glucose for energy!!
Would depend on the bacteria and their nutrient requirements. Some bacteria are acidophiles and can grow in acidic environments. I remember from bio lab that fungi are easily inoculated onto acid peptone agar. So it's possible I think...

What exactly are FUNGI, and how is it that they can eat dead wood with their tentacles(decomposers)?

    Also are Mushrooms their ';flowers';?

I am just wondering about there feeding process and how it works.

I hope you can help me.

Thanks in Advance, English is not my mother tongue. What exactly are FUNGI, and how is it that they can eat dead wood with their tentacles(decomposers)?
Fungi are living organisms that possess a distinct nucleus (eukaryotic) and which reproduce by forming spores, instead of seeds. Fungi also do not produce chlorophyll; this means that they cannot manufacture sugars, so they must obtain their nutrients externally from other organisms. They do this by absorbing food materials from either living organisms, as parasites, or from dead organic matter, as saprobes. Fungi are simple in structure compared to most plants. The ';body'; or thallus of most fungi is a long, slender, tubular structure called a ';hypha';, but in a few fungi (the yeasts) the thallus consists of a single cell. Although some fungi, such as the mushrooms, are large enough to be seen easily, most fungi are microscopic in size and must be observed with the aid of a microscope. What exactly are FUNGI, and how is it that they can eat dead wood with their tentacles(decomposers)?
Fungi are a separate lifeform, just like animals and plants.

They ';eat'; wood by secreting digestive chemicals onto it, and absorbing the released nutrients and energy.

Mushrooms are the fruiting bodies of some (but not all) fungi, and they contain spores. They are analagous to say, a tomato or an apple, which contain seeds.
The mushrooms are the fruiting bodies, slightly similar to flowers. They release spores which do not have to fuse with another to grow, they do not have any food store like a seed. The spore is a single cell and their cells divide in a way that is different from other organisms, thats what sets them apart from plants and animals.

For most of the time they are an interwoven tissue of branching threads(hypha), their cell walls are made of chitin, the same material insects make their skeletons from. The attack the wood with a powerful acid that breaks down cellulose but not their chitin.

There are many other types of fungi that feed on other things (for example petroleum) but i won't go into detail.

  • What are the types of Subcategories in the Fungi Kingdom?

Either you can help by giving me an informative Link or give me good information. Thank you. What are the types of Subcategories in the Fungi Kingdom?
    [edit] Types of fungi

The major divisions (phyla) of fungi are mainly classified based on their sexual reproductive structures. Currently, five divisions are recognized:

The Chytridiomycota are commonly known as chytrids. These fungi produce zoospores that are capable of moving on their own through liquid menstrua by simple flagella.

The Zygomycota are known as zygomycetes and reproduce sexually with meiospores called zygospores and asexually with sporangiospores. Black bread mold (Rhizopus stolonifer) is a common species that belongs to this group; another is Pilobolus, which shoots specialized structures through the air for several meters. Medically relevant genera include Mucor, Rhizomucor, and Rhizopus. Molecular phylogenetic investigation has shown the zygomycota to be a polyphyletic group.

Fungus seen under microscope.Members of the Glomeromycota are also known as the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. Only one species has been observed forming zygospores; all other species only reproduce asexually. This is an ancient association, with evidence dating to 350 million years ago.

The Ascomycota, commonly known as sac fungi or ascomycetes, form meiotic spores called ascospores, which are enclosed in a special sac-like structure called an ascus. This division includes morels, some mushrooms and truffles, as well as single-celled yeasts and many species that have only been observed undergoing asexual reproduction. Because the products of meiosis are retained within the sac-like ascus, several ascomyctes have been used for elucidating principles of genetics and heredity (e.g. Neurospora crassa).

Members of the Basidiomycota, commonly known as the club fungi or basidiomycetes, produce meiospores called basidiospores on club-like stalks called basidia. Most common mushrooms belong to this group, as well as rust (fungus) and smut fungi, which are major pathogens of grains.

Although the water moulds and slime moulds have traditionally been placed in the kingdom Fungi and those who study them are still called mycologists, they are not true fungi. Unlike true fungi, the water moulds and slime moulds do not have cell walls made of chitin. In the 5-kingdom system, they are currently placed in the kingdom Protista. Water moulds are descended from algae, and are placed within the phylum Oomycota, within the Kingdom Protista. What are the types of Subcategories in the Fungi Kingdom?
At a junior, somewhat outdated level, they would be:

    basidiomycetes

    ascomycetes

    zygomyctees

Why do Fungi require a moist and warm environment to live?

I think it's because water/moisture is a vital nutrient of fungi (as it is will all organisms) but what does the temperature have to do with anything? Is it because if the temperature is too cold than the water will go away or something. Be as specific as you can.

Thanks peopleWhy do Fungi require a moist and warm environment to live?
Fungi can tolerate a wide range of temperatures and moisture content. For example, I just threw out a jar of fruit preserves that had gotten moldy in spite of being kept in the refrigerator! It had high sugar content and cold temperatures but mold still was able to grow. On the other hand, fungal parasites of animals will grow faster in warm temperatures. So it is hard to make a general statement about fungi needing moist, warm environments.

Why is fungi considered more closely related to animals than plants?

We don't have alteration of generations although fungi don't use PSN thats the only thing I can think ofWhy is fungi considered more closely related to animals than plants?
No. they're in a class by themselves. Somewhere I've heard that mushrooms are mutations of yeasts that were prevalent in the Ice Ages. I would think they go back before that.

A fungus can take on a lot of forms from one that feeds on animal material, living or dead, to one that is mobile feeding on rotten vegetation, such as a slime mold. They can be immense in size such as a really old mushroom mycelium (sp) which covers a few square miles to a single mold cell. Why is fungi considered more closely related to animals than plants?
Well that explains it. Most of my relatives were nothin' but fungi. Are you a fungi (fun guy) too?
Fungi are not capable of performing photosynthesis, so must get their nourishment from other sources. Many fungi absorb nutrients directly from t he soil. Many others feed on dead and decaying organisms. Still others feed on living organisms. Athlete's foot is a common fungus which feeds on a living host - you!

They also have chitinous cell walls rather than cellulose as found in plants.
This relatedness is based on the DNA sequences of the animal cells compared to fungal cells, plants and bacteria.

Are the fungi under division Ascomycota anaerobic or aerobic in terms of their supply of energy?

Please give examples of anaerobic and aerobic fungi under Ascomycota and explain each of them.tnx.Are the fungi under division Ascomycota anaerobic or aerobic in terms of their supply of energy?
aerobic, fungi does not survive without oxygen

What is the difference between molds and fungi?

Please help? I need to know this answer for an upcoming microbiology exam and I am quite confused and I am seeking outside help? Any help would be greatly appreciated. ThanksWhat is the difference between molds and fungi?
Well one makes good cheese. What is the difference between molds and fungi?
Moulds (or moulds; see spelling differences) include all species of microscopic fungi that grow in the form of multicellular filaments, called hyphae. In contrast, microscopic fungi that grow as single cells are called yeasts. A connected network of these tubular branching hyphae has multiple, genetically identical nuclei and is considered a single organism, referred to as a colony or in more technical terms a mycelium.

Molds do not form a specific taxonomic or phylogenetic grouping, but can be found in the divisions Zygomycota, Deuteromycota and Ascomycota. Although some molds cause disease or food spoilage, others are useful for their role in biodegradation or in the production of various foods, beverages, antibiotics and enzymes.
Well mold is a fungus itself. Fungi are a kingdom and mold is a member. What makes mold unique is that they grow in multicellular filaments called hyphae.
    fungus is anaerobic

You could have a food allergy. My father has an allergic reaction where his hands crack badly if he has too much milk (cow's).

It's amplified when he drinks milk and consumes too much processed sugar.

    Best wishes,

pupI am having a problem with foot problems maybe fungus not sure dry cracklingfeet and toe nails are discoloring
ohhhhhhh, u might have.. (for got what it was called...), is your foot like, realy dry and when you peel a little off, it comes off really easly???Also, your foot has alota extral dry skin, and your toe nail is like, yellowish??? if so, i forgot what it was called, but ya, pretty sure you have 'em.
dude that has happened to me before. it is SO ANNOYING! it made me self-concious and stuff! anyway i think u definitly need 2 use lamisil 4 ur toenails and use jergans lotion. hope u get better!
    you need vitamins
    It's a fungus.
YES if your toenails are dry, yellowish, flaky you have fungus. Also your cracking feet my or may not be fungus, it may just be very dry (use some lotion everyday) or they can be athletes foot.

For your toenails, use Lamisil, it will get rid of the fungus which is living under your nails.

See your doctor or foot specialist to properly diagnose your issues. And ask about the different types of medication creams for your foot.
Try a combination of tea tree oil and colloidal silver...

One teaspoon of colloidal silver taken oraly one to three times daily for no more than five days...

Massage tea tree oil onto toenails and all around and between toes first thing in the morning and right before bedtime... sleep with bare feet... when using tea tree oil on toenails, it might be helpful to use a toothbrush or the like - use a clean, unused toothbrush and make sure to work it well into the cuticles and under the nails...

Wear socks during the day, with closed-toe shoes, and massage shea butter or cocoa butter, preferably shea, between toes during the day, to keep dry the cracked areas between the toes... You'll heal better this way, and be a little more comfortable.

Within a week, toes and toenails should be looking healthier and odor should significantly decrease.

    Throw away that toothbrush!

  • What is the scientific reason of why a white piece of bread grows fungi before wheat bread does?

Please don't answer something like,';Do your own work.'; or ,';Because of its appearence.'; for your answer. Thank you very much!! =)What is the scientific reason of why a white piece of bread grows fungi before wheat bread does?
Digestibility of the nutrients in wheat are increased with increased processing of the wheat flour. Whole wheat flour has the same actual calories of processed wheat flour. However, the processed wheat flour is more digestible than the whole wheat flour and consequently has less digestible calories than processed wheat flour. This affects the way animals (and fungus) can utilize the flour as a food source. The more processed the flour is the more rapidly it can be utilized for animal (and fungus) growth. What is the scientific reason of why a white piece of bread grows fungi before wheat bread does?
i think it may be because there is more yeast and sugar in white bread.
White bread is basically pure starch and useable carbohydrates for fungi while wheat bread contains alot more fiber which the fungi can't break or at least makes it harder to break down
I have no proof, however I think it's because the whole wheat is more acidic.
because it's easier to break down.

After washing it, is it still safe to use?Is it still safe to use tupperware which have come in contact with fungi?
yes it still ok to use if it been clean properly and best if cleaned in a dish washer .Is it still safe to use tupperware which have come in contact with fungi?
Yes, it is still safe to use and if you don't have a dishwasher soak the Tupperware in a rinse water that is 1/4 bleach.
no plastic keeps the fungi locked in. you should throw out the container - and buy a new one - thet r very cheap!
steam or bleach it to be sure but it should be fine.
Tupperware is well designed and is great for cleaning up and using again. I can't see you having any problems at all.
Yes I'm still alive after getting tupperware out of a dumpster filled with funky food and mold and stench. I cleaned it up and it's like new. Tupperware lasts virtually forever.
Yes it would still be safe to use it if you disinfect it in bleach or cloudy ammonia with hot water first.
yup sure it is. but use either disinfecting dishwashing soap or a dishwasher. i did that and i'm fine ;D

What to do when you eat fungi by accident ?

i eat a bagel and i got into a bite and it tasted really gross but i just swallowed it anyway and when i looked at it, it was yellow fungi or something. i few times already i felt like i was gonna throw up, what should i do ? i drank some soda already and brushed my teeth. What to do when you eat fungi by accident ?
it wasn't an onion bagel was it? if it was you might get onionosis fatalis. it's an extremely fatal type of fungus that grows on onions.

i'm just kidding. you'll be fine. remember many good things have come from fungi. What to do when you eat fungi by accident ?
Gargle with warm water with some salt couple of times today and even tomorrow. You can also try Tea Tree oil.Mix it with warm water as well and gargle. All ways check all food closely before you eat no matter where you are.Good Luck.
    You're going to die.
What I would do is drink some water with lemon in it-- lemon is a disinifectant.

Herbal aids I would also use would be Golden Seal -- speaking for myself -- I personally would make a tea of it or swallow a capsule or two (if you have Diabetes-- be careful-- it supposedly lowers blood sugar) Golden Seal is reputed to kill poisons in the system.

And/or I personally would also take Milk Thistle -- said to help detoxify the liver.

Role of trichoderma fungus to plants?

Alamethicin is a peptide antibiotic, produced by the fungus Trichoderma viride. It contains the non-proteinogenic amino acid 2-aminoisobutyric acid (Aib), which strongly induces helical peptide structures. The peptide sequence is:

    Ac-Aib-Pro-Aib-Ala-Aib-Ala-Gln-Aib-Val鈥?br>

(Ac = acetyl, Phl = phenylalaninol)

    CAS number: 27061-78-5

In cell membranes, it forms voltage-dependent ion channels by aggregation of four to six molecules.Role of trichoderma fungus to plants?

My girlfriend caught this nasty toenail fungus and trust me I didn't give it to her. Anyway, I bought her this medicated cream call CLOTRIMAZOLE. Basically just apply a thin a thin layer on the infected area and amazingly within three weeks, her toes started to show sign of healthy nail and got better each day. today she totally free of fungus.

Then to prevent another episode smelly feet and nasty looking toenail - I burnt all her shoes and socks.

    Thanks to CLOTRIMAZOLE.

Btw, believe it or not I bought it at the Dollar Store.
Ok. My husband had this issue with his feet for about 10 years. He's been to several doctors to try and figure out what this is, but with no luck. He's even been the center of clinical studies and no one still could figure it out!

A few months back, I introduced him to Tea Tree Oil. It works very well when used against fungus, dry skin, and many, many other skin conditions.

Go out and get a bottle. It can be found at your local drug store, more than likely in the hair care isle. It'll cost you probably around $3-$4 for a 2oz bottle - but that little bit will last a while!

    Next, buy a very mild unscented soap. My husband used a body wash. When you get home, put 4-5 drops of the oil in it and shake well. Wash your feet with it after this. I'm telling you, it works wonders! You can read up a bit on it more here ~~~~~~%26gt;

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tea_tree_oi鈥?/a>

    Good luck!
Vicks Vapor Rub - rub it on your toenails twice daily - could see results in as little as a couple weeks, or it may take longer . . . worked for me and a few others, so it's worth a shot - or you can go to the dr and get a prescription
    antifungal cream!

I have a fungus on my feet i want to wear sandals and heels how do i get it off?

If something over the counter (like Lotrimin) isn't helping, you may need to check with your doctor or podiatrist for something stronger.

This is gross, but! how do i get rid of a foot and toenail fungus?

Lots of people get this, so don't freak out. It can take quite a while to go away, however, and there's no guarantee it will not come back, even if you use a prescription. The 2 prescription drugs are terbinafine (Lamisil) and itraconazole (Sporanox). Both can damage the liver, and itraconazole also can damage the heart, so be aware that these are not real safe. In addition, you have to take them for about 3 months and about 40 percent of people don't get good results.

You can try topical vitamin E. If you can't find the oil, you can buy the gel caps, pierce them with a needle and squeeze out the oil. Treat the affected toes twice a day. Tea tree oil (available in health food stores) is also good; use just like vitamin E. Both of these natural ways take a long time--about 4-6 months--but so do the drugs and at least the natural ways are not toxic. Two other natural approaches are garlic oil and oil of oregano.

Good luckThis is gross, but! how do i get rid of a foot and toenail fungus?
This ebook really worksThis is gross, but! how do i get rid of a foot and toenail fungus?
I found a simple lavender foot cream to work wonders for me!
There are over the counter treatments available at walmart and drug stores. Fungus is easy to get rid of...but you have to be patient. It takes a while for the treatment to work. Good luck!

Also, if you want to see a doc and get rid of it faster, there are pills that work too! But you will need a prescription.

What are the nutrients that bracket fungi have?

i am planning to make these fungi as feeds. What are the nutrients that bracket fungi have?
In general, fungi are rich in vitamins, minerals and oils/fats (not cholesterol raising types). Your fungus may also have proteins. Exactly what nutrients a fungus has depends on species (bracket fungus is a general type, not a single species).

You wouldn't want to feed an animal entirely on bracket fungus though. It's bound to lack some essential things. You also need to be very sure you can identify the edible type and similar poisonous species, so that you don't make mistakes.

    Is this fungus treatment dangerous?

i just bought some of those fizz tabs that take care of fungus in aquariums and i was reading the instructions when i noticed the warning: this product is known to the state of california to cause cancer. should i be worried if it gets on me or whatever? Is this fungus treatment dangerous?
No need to worry. The state of CA has also deemed that just about any synthetic or synthesized product will cause cancer of some kind. If you really want to avoid any unnecessary health problems, just wash your hands with soap after handling the tablets.

How can I get species of fungi to come in my garden naturally?

I'm trying to catch fungi and grow them in my garden but my garden is just a stretch of lawn and thats it. No trees. No bushes no nothing but grass. How can I catch them and grow them? How can I get species of fungi to come in my garden naturally?
They will need something to grow on usually thatch or wood like dead tree roots, something that offers them the chance of living on dead organic material. Many times when people bring in wood chips they will find the mycelium growing through the chips very soon after a wet period.

You can ask your neighbors for a few attractive branches brought down in a storm or get them from a local farmer possibly. Place the wood where it will receive water as fungi require moisture to grow. Place a layer of chips over newspaper or cardboard (so grass %26amp; weeds do not emerge through the chips) and water in well. Colonize the wood with a commercial mushroom kit after you have grown a crop to the point of fruiting.

The chips can also become the beginning of a healthy soil to grow perennials or vegetables once the wood has sufficiently broken down to build soil.

Hey, i see the people under me [ or over me, where ever my answer goes] said that Vic's vapor rub works, and from a 5 year nail fungus battle experience, it doesn't. it looks like it's working, but it's really just making your nail moist. tea tree oil might not either.. what i've been doing is cutting my nail back to expose the crusty cracked yellowish infected part, filing it down, then putting generic bleach on it. [with a q-tip etc.] it has killed most of the fungus and i've only been doing this for three or four days now, it looks great. clearing up very nicely. you have to be VERY aggressive to kill nail fungus. when you file your nail, make sure you don't miss a single spot. it's very easy to miss a few spots or spores and have it get infected again. if the bleach starts to burn [ witch generic shouldn't...] wash it off Immediately! you can mess up your nail bed that way. hope i helped.Does tea tree oil works on nail fungus??? and where do you get it?

What are the way to avoid fungi contamination in plant tissue culture?

what are the way to avoid fungi contamination in plant tissue culture?i have done a callus induction experiment but the culture is contaminated by fungus. What are the way to avoid fungi contamination in plant tissue culture?
I assume your plants are on agar medium in a petri dish. To avoid contamination, it is necessary to do two things:

1.) When you plant the seeds in the agar medium, do this ONLY in a sterile environment. Also, avoid touching the agar medium with non-sterile tools or letting non-sterile air waft over the medium. In other words, use a fume hood.

2.) After you are finished planting the seeds, close the petri dish and wrap it's perimeter with Scotch tape to prevent the plate from being contaminated by fungi.

    Hope this helps,

some yeast can be used to make bread or beer. Some yeast can cause disease, like Candida.

Some Strep can cause sore throat and scarlet fever and rheumatic fever. Some Strep is commonly found in milk causing souring, used in cheese making and etc. Strep dentis is now looked at as a cause for dental caries.

There are many helpful bacteria in decomposition that can cause an infection. What are some bacteria, viruses, and fungi that are helpful? What are some that are harmful?
Bacteria are almost universally benign or downright useful. They along with fungi decompose dead organisms and organic waste, both returning nutrients to the bottom of the food chain and preventing us from drowning in our own waste. Bacteria are used to make yogurt and cheese, among others, and fungi are also ingredients in cheese, allowed to grow with various types. We eat mushrooms. Yeast is vital in making bread rise and fermenting fruit and vegetable juices to make alcoholic beverages.

Bacteria are also genetically modified to produce proteins such as human insulin. Modified viruses may be used to deliver genes into bacteria for genetic modification, and bacteriophages are viruses that infect bacteria and may be useful one day in combating bacterial infections, since they are evolving to be resistant to antibiotics

Viruses are obligate parasites that co-opt a cells machinery to self replicate but some time this, in itself, is of benefit. Viral replication is known to abscond with host DNA as part of the viral genome then insert the stolen DNA in another host cell resulting in a new form. This can even occur across species. Recombination is a powerfull tool for evolution.

A benefit conferred by viral genes in humans is a sequence installed by a retrovirus that regulates the amylase gene cluster, allowing us to produce amylase in our saliva. This sequence that we share with a few other primates enables us to eat starchy foods we otherwise couldn't. - Coffin, John M.; Stephen H. Hughes and Harold E. Varmus, eds. Plants to fungi to bacteria

Many plants form symbiotic relationships with fungi called mycorrhizae (literally fungus-root). Mycorrhizae increase the ability of plants to take up nutrients and water. All this happens in the root zone called the rhizosphere. The immediate rhizosphere supports more microorganisms than in soil distant from the plant.

This increase in population density is most pronounced with bacteria. The reason the bacteria show a proximity gradient is that they receives exudates from the plants secreted into the soil while fungi being in a symbiosis receive the exudates directly.

Beneficial soil bacteria include actinomycetes that grow filaments like fungi. They degrade lignin, chitin and fix nitrogen in the soil. Bacteria make up 80 to 90% of the billions of microorganisms typically found in a gram of compost.

Mycorrhizae are part of the soils fungi. There are two forms endo- %26amp; ecto- mycorrhizae collectively called arbuscular. Both are necessary to release nutrients from the forest detritus for plants to use. In return plants secrete carbohydrate exudates. This totals some 10-25% of the plants photosynthetic activity. They partner in a symbiosis where plants capture energy from the sun to feed themselves and exchange this food for select nutrients and water retentive, humus rich soil made by the inhabitants of their rhizosphere. Mostly the fungi and actinomycetes seem to be responsible for humus formation. So this symbiosis is at least three way; plants to both bacteria and fungi. Between them they control the humic soil content and suppress pests.

While actinomycetes can be the source of diseases in humans, such as lung abscesses and appendicitis they are also the source of antibiotics including streptomycin, tetracycline, and cephalosporin.

Armilleria a fungal root disease is being counteracted with a naturally occurring beneficial soil fungus Hyphaloma fasciculare.

    Hey Magi,

Knowing what you had to do with the culture would help. In lieu of that, if you have good sterile procedure you can transfer a section of agar culture (or whatever medium you have) and inoculate more substrate. This might give you more tissue to work with and thereby room for error if your first extraction does not work out well.

To actually extract your chemical from the fungus you will most probably need to do something to rupture the cell walls like mashing, blending, etc.

If you're talking about microscopic fungi compared to bacteria you need to remember fungi are eukaryotes. This means they're G phases take longer because they have more DNA and organelles to replicate before division. So if you seed two equal amounts of media with the same number of bacteria in one and fungi in the other, after twenty-four hours the bacteria flask will be more dense.

Don't worry I know the best solution for your problem.I'm not going to get into detail about this

    BODY FUNGUS DISEASE

Firstly, go to your fish retailer shop ask for BODY FUNGUS medicine .The medicine may come in tablet or solution.

Later just add the medicine in your fish tank according to the amount or dossage required and don't,t take other fish in the tank out as they might have the disease as well.

Lastly ,change the water after 2-3 day and repeat the procedure above until the fish 100% recovered.

It is optional to keep the filter in and out but I think is better out and try to change the water 25% after 1-2 days and repeat the procedure like I mention above.

This also happened before to fish sometimes may happen to Betta as well as most of the fish but later they recovered using the method above.

Better act quick if not your fish may die as this is a deathly disease and don't try to put salt in it as it may make the situation worse.

Important, next time don't forget to change the water in tank 2-3 times a month and don't put foreing object in the tank to minimise the fish from disease.White fungus over fishes eyes and body?
The ';body fungus'; that Ray mentioned is NOT fungus, but bacteria (Flexibacter columnaris), so using the medications he suggested will do nothing to treat the true fungus your Barramundi is suffering from. Any copper based treatment (Quick Cure, Coppersafe, Malachite Green + Formalin, etc.) or any parasite treatment (Rid Ich, Ich Away, Parasite Clear, etc.) will effectively treat it. There is no need to raise the temperature, as this will further decrease the amount of oxygen in the water (meds decrease it as well).

If it is indeed Columnaris, don't look for ';body fungus medication';, as this will lead to you a wide array of fungal medications that would have no affect on the bacteria. Instead, look for Maracyn, Trisulfa powder, or Furan-2, all of which are effective against the gram negative infection.

Well, there's really not a lot of information about what it looks like specifically... If it looks like white stringy/cottony stuff, then it's most likely columnaris, which is actually a bacterial infection. Unfortunately, it's an extremely quick killer unless you treat the fish immediately. :-\
I'm no genius but it could be symptoms of White Spot. I lost a whole tank of fish to this ailment.

Just be warned that the fungus could be a symptom of many illnesses and that a pet store owner might be able to advise you.
