Drug abuse and resultant heart fungus?

Did an old magazine article in US News and World Report

publishe an article linking drug abusers with a fungal infection within the abusers heart muscle?Drug abuse and resultant heart fungus?
Not sure about fungal, but IV heroin users tend to die before the age of 40 due to heart infections, usually bacterial though, but I see no reason they couldn't be fungal.

With a needle in the vein, especially one that's not totally sterile, you're dumping bacteria, and whatever else, into your blood, which is relatively sterile.
